This portrait of my mother was very theraputic for me to do. I lost her over 20 years ago. I wasn't sure that I would ever finish drawing all those curls! I thank Lee Hammond, author of How to Draw Lifelike Portraits from Photographs, for explaining, so well, how to draw Mom's beautiful blue eyes, in black and white.

A hand drawn portrait is not a photograph. It is not an exact representation of a moment in time but rather a synthesis of the person and the artist. This is why I like having multiple photos of my subjects to work from. One of these is the main 'pose.' The others to give me background and a feeling for the person.
